LOCATION : MIDSUND, NORWAY
PROJECT : COURSEWORK
TYPOLOGY : MONASTERY
ARCHITECT : JENSEN + SKODVIN ARCHITECTS
Simple spaces of the convent inspires calm and insight. Built as a closed building with interior gardens, the convent section is closed and private, mirroring the introvert character of the daily life of the nuns, but the church hall is open to public, the roof is designed to provide views to the heaven above, and constructed in a way that allows the light to let in and make ingenious patterns on the walls.
Outer surfaces are made out of a collage of thin stripes of differently colored slates, to blend harmoniously with the Norwegian landscape. The slabs are fastened to the structure with metal clamps.
Almost all corridors are eliminated, instead using all of the main rooms where the nuns assemble as corridors and circulation areas. No wood veneer are used on the inside walls because it would distract the nuns from their prayers.
